On November 9, FASEB President Hudson Freeze, PhD, issued the following statement in response to the 2016 United States presidential election:
Many of us were surprised by the results of the presidential election and didn’t foresee the mood of the electorate. One thing, however, is crystal clear: our advocacy on behalf of biomedical research is now more important than ever. It is absolutely crucial to make sure that the new administration understands the enormous benefit that scientific research brings to all Americans.
There will be new people in key positions and—with the same party controlling the White House and Congress—the gridlock in Washington may be over during the honeymoon period of the new Administration. We anticipate a lot of legislative and policy activity as the new leadership defines its agenda and seeks to create momentum during its first 100 days in office.
Last week, the FASEB Public Affairs Committee discussed transition to a new administration and a new Congress with a panel of experts experienced in staffing the White House, Congress, and federal agencies. We discussed how the transition process will unfold and are now developing our own plans to make sure that the new officials and their staff appreciate the critical importance of our priorities.
This is an important time for the FASEB community. Now more than ever, we can and must make a difference.
